This is one of the oddest finds, it was found right within the central area of the main excavation trench. It is a thin perforated roughly circular slate - 400mm x 330mm and 2mm thick.

The off-centre perforation is 100mm diameter. It weighs 10.6g. Its discovery promoted much discussion because on one side are traces of marks in white paint. These radiate out from the hole and look like rays of light. This made us suspicious as to the date of the find and we do not think it is a Neolithic object or indeed even prehistoric in date. Since it was found high up in the soil covering the centre of the site and would have been immediately under the collapsed stone pile it is likely to have been buried here in recent times. It may well be a modern amulet or talisman left by a benign visitor – a New Ager perhaps or a Pagan.
